In 1913, Community Solutions (then, the Welfare Federation of Cleveland) may have been the nation’s first nonprofit human services organization to hire a public relations staff person. At first, our main concern was communicating on behalf of the community’s health and social service programs to raise public awareness and support. Recognizing the critical need for organizations to tell their own stories—to let the community know about their causes, issues, and services—we began a program of education about public relations and nonprofit communications. Beginning in 1952 and lasting for over 40 years, we held a monthly series known as the Public Relations Workshop, as well as a periodic PR Seminar Series.
Educational programs for professionals and volunteers in the communications field continues today through workshops focused on topics such as working with the media, public relations planning, crisis communications, branding, Websites and social media, etc.
Two regular programs include:
- Annual “Telling Your Story: Nonprofits & The Media”
(The last “Telling Your Story” program, focused on mobile marketing, was held on November 15, 2011)
Dix & Eaton--Mobile Marketing Presentation
- Biennial series, “BIG PR Planning on a Nonprofit Budget”
(This series will be held in February, 2012. It will be the fourth time this series has been presented.)
