Past Events of Note:
2010
  • On June 23, 2010, AFC sponsored a community outreach event in partnership with Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) in conjunction with National HIV Testing Day. More than 30 volunteers distributed information about HIV/AIDS, testing locations, and special events at numerous RTA rapid stations around Greater Cleveland. The national Greater Than AIDS campaign also promoted National HIV Testing Day events in Cleveland and other partner communities. Thank you to our volunteers, and to our national partners for their generous support of the local testing initiative!
  • On February 17, 2010, the AIDS Funding Collaborative (AFC) sponsored a Community Briefing at Nueva Luz Urban Resource Center for grantees to share highlights and lessons learned from national HIV/AIDS conferences and trainings they attended in 2009.
2009
  • On December 3, 2009, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of HIV/AIDS Policy hosted a town hall meeting in Cleveland to solicit recommendations in the form of testimony for the development of the National AIDS Strategy. Over 150 Ohioans attended and provided hours of testimony. The AFC provided support for the town hall and staff helped to coordinate the event.   • On November 30, over 30 volunteers coordinated by the AFC provided information to commuters at RTA Rapid stations around the city for World AIDS Day. Approximately 5,000 people were reached through the event.
  • AFC sponsored two community outreach events for HIV Testing Day in the month of June. Over 20 volunteers handed out information on HIV/AIDS, testing locations, and special events in June at RTA stations around Cleveland. Thank you to our volunteers!
  • The AFC's 2008 Annual Report was released on June 16, 2009. 
  • On May 1, 2009, the AFC co-sponsored an afternoon workshop on the criminalization of HIV and the issues around disclosure. The workshop was held at University Hospitals.
  • On February 19, 2009, the AIDS Funding Collaborative (AFC) sponsored a Community Briefing at Trinity Commons for grantees to share highlights and lessons learned from national HIV/AIDS conferences and trainings they attended in 2008. Click here to read notes from the presentations.  
  • On January 5, 2009, the AFC, in cooperation with Cleveland Mayor Frank G. Jackson, the Cuyahoga County Commissioners, Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD), and the Collaborative for Comprehensive School-Age Health, released the findings from an evaluation of CMSD's K-12 Responsible Sexual Behavior Initiative for the 2007-2008 school year. 2008
  • On Monday, December 1, 2008, the AFC sponsored a community outreach event in recognition of World AIDS Day. Nearly 40 volunteers distributed information on HIV/AIDS and HIV testing locations at 11 of the busiest RTA stations throughout Cleveland.
  • On November 12th, AFC sponsored a half-day HIV training for professionals in the field of re-entry. Close to 50 people attended.
  • Through a recent series of AFC/Community Agency forums, staff from local agencies engaged in HIV/AIDS-related programming had an opportunity for dialogue with AFC members and each other about local trends, challenges, and priorities around HIV programming in Cleveland. These conversations will help inform AFC priorities in grantmaking in the coming year. A summary of the highlights from these conversations will be available here at a later date.
  • On September 5, 2008, the AFC sponsored a Community Forum, Moving Beyond the HIV 'Care' and 'Prevention' Silos: A Dialogue about Community Viral Load. The Forum was held at the Case Western Reserve University Medical School and featured Dr. Ron Stall.   • The AFC's 2007 Annual Report was released on June 4, 2008. 
  • On Thursday, June 26, 2008, AFC sponsored a community outreach event to coincide with the National HIV Testing Day on June 27th. Volunteers handed out information on HIV/AIDS and HIV testing events at RTA stations around Cleveland. A write-up can be found in the July/August, 2008, edition of Planning & Action, due out in early August.  
  • On March 28, 2008, in partnership with the Council on Older Person (COOP), the AFC organized morning session #6: The New (Older) Face of HIV/AIDS, at the 66th annual Human Services Institute. Two experts commented on the growing issue of HIV/AIDS in older adults. Two individuals living with HIV/AIDS over age 50 told their personal stories in this informative session. Leaders provided practical suggestions and resources to integrate into work with older adults. 
  • On March 15 and 16, 2008, the AFC sponsored the screening of All of Us at the 32nd Cleveland International Film Festival (CIFF). The event included a Film Forum, a moderated panel discussion with the filmmaker and producer as well as HIV/AIDS community leaders and consumers.
  • On February 29, 2008, the AFC sponsored a Community Briefing at The Cleveland Foundation. Participants joined recent national HIV/AIDS conference attendees to learn about emerging practices and topics related to HIV prevention, advocacy, and care.
2007
  • The November/December, 2007, issue of Planning & Action includes an article entitled, "Implementation of Routine HIV Testing: A Year after the CDC's Revised Recommendations." (See page 9.)
  • December 1, 2007, marked the 20th World AIDS Day commemoration. Around our community, agencies and individuals observed this important day with HIV testing events, outreach activities, educational events, and a memorial reception.
  • August 23-25, 2007, Cleveland hosted the National Association of People with AIDS (NAPWA) 10th Annual Staying Alive conference. Staying Alive is the only national conference in the United States run by and specifically for people living with HIV/AIDS. A local planning committee for Staying Alive 2007 consisted of approximately 40 people, including people living with HIV/AIDS, staff from the city, county and state government, directors and staff of community-based organizations and health care and research institutions, members of the faith community, and other community activists. AFC’s program director served as co-chair of that committee. By all accounts, the conference, attended by more than 300 people from throughout the country, was a wonderful success.
  • On June 24, 2007, in advance of National HIV Testing Day, the AFC coordinated a community outreach effort at 10 RTA rapid stations. Approximately 40 volunteers handed out approximately information about HIV/AIDS and HIV testing to commuters during the evening rush hour.
