HIV/AIDS in Our Community
The Cleveland Department of Public Health (CDPH) publishes the most timely accounting of the HIV/AIDS epidemic among Cleveland residents and in the Greater Cleveland Area (i.e., Cleveland and surrounding area within Cuyahoga County). The HIV/AIDS statistics published on the
CDPH Website
include prevalence data (e.g., the number of people living with HIV/AIDS) as well as information about routes of transmission. Additionally, each year CDPH releases a report on annual incidence of HIV/AIDS (e.g., new cases of HIV/AIDS diagnosed in that year), which provides insight about the trends in the epidemic that are used in directing our prevention efforts.
2009 Data
As of the end of 2009, 4,075 people in Cuyahoga County—including just over 2,900 Clevelanders—were living with HIV/AIDS. We have seen a decrease in the total number of new cases of HIV/AIDS diagnosed among residents of Cuyahoga County over the past three years, with the 184 new cases in 2009 representing an 8% decrease from 2008. Young people age 13-24 represent more than one-third of all new cases, and in 2009, 35.3% of new cases in the County were among non-Cleveland residents, an increasing trend. See the full
