Nearly 294,000 Ohioans will exhaust their unemployment benefits over the next five months if Congress refuses to act (11/23/10)

Eligibility for extended unemployment compensation benefits will expire on November 30, 2010, unless Congress acts swiftly. If Congress fails to act, nearly 294,000 Ohioans could be affected between December, 2010, and April, 2011. With the state unemployment rate at nearly 10 percent, these Ohioans face poor prospects for re-employment, and their families are at increased risk of foreclosure, hunger, loss of health insurance, and other hardships. Helping these families will be a major challenge for social service agencies, churches, schools, and local governments across the state.
