As families climb from poverty to economic independence, they lose public benefits as their income increases. Unfortunately, there are points on the journey where earning even $1 more means the family will lose a benefit worth hundreds of dollars each month. This phenomena, known as the benefit cliff, has been called the “single greatest barrier to self-sufficiency for low income individuals”.
This webinar will introduce participants to the benefit cliff and how it can impact low-income families. New data will be presented which shows where Ohio working families would experience a cliff. We will discuss how policy decisions in recent years have improved or deepened cliffs, and what it might take families to overcome these obstacles.
This webinar is approved for one CEU by the National Association of Social Workers Ohio Chapter.
