In a previous blog, the CCS Research team identified some trends we would be looking for in the U.S. Census Bureau data released today. The big day is here – let’s take a look!
4. Did Cleveland stop losing people?
Estimates of Cleveland’s population have declined each year since 2010. Meanwhile, community development projects are bringing residents back into the city. Has it been enough to halt the negative population growth? The data will tell.
The short answer is: NO. Cleveland is still losing people.

The slightly longer answer is: still no, and the number of people leaving Cleveland is increasing (slightly).

In fact, among the three most populous Ohio cities, over the last 10 years, only Columbus seen a pattern of population growth. Cleveland and Cincinnati have followed a similar trend over the past 10 years, with a blip of growth in 2009, followed by a return to a flat-lined population (or in Cleveland’s case- an ever so gradual declining population).

We also looked at population trends in Cuyahoga and its surrounding counties. While Cuyahoga’s population trends downward overall (a population loss of about 65,000 people over the past decade), its surrounding counties populations are essentially flat, although some have seen minor increases over the past decade.
