Improving Infant, Maternal and Adolescent Health: October 21 Celebration Forum

Maternal and infant health is a Community Solutions priority that we spend a lot of time researching and exploring, especially in the past year. The result is always the same: significant disparities exist for mothers, babies, and families: and there are steps that Ohio could take to make improvements. For example, Ohio recently took advantage of new opportunities to expand postpartum Medicaid coverage for 12 months up from 6 weeks, which will result in better birth outcomes for thousands of Ohio families.

Making Policy to Improve Infant, Maternal and Adolescent Health

At our first in-person Celebration event in two years, we’ll be inviting new voices into this urgent topic. Our morning session at the 2022 Celebration of Human Services on Friday, October 21 will feature a discussion: Making Policy to Improve Infant, Maternal and Adolescent Health.

Panelists include:

  • Ohio Senator Matt Dolan (R)
  • Franklin County Commissioner Erica Crawley (D)
  • Moderator: Marcia Egbert, program director for Thriving Families & Social Justice, The George Gund Foundation

Dolan and Crawley were advocates for the extension of Medicaid postpartum coverage, and support for policies to improve services for multi-system youth like OhioRise, as well as the availability and sustainability of doulas and midwives. Their conversation will offer insights into how health policy is made, what advocates should know to be successful, and why these policies will benefit all Ohioans.

The afternoon program also celebrates the winner of the $25,000 Anisfield-Wolf Memorial Award and six Most Treasured Volunteers.

Celebrating the Genius of Solutions

Following their session, the luncheon program will include the address, Celebrating the Genius of Solutions. Keynote speaker Rev. Dr. Tim Ahrens argues that genius is not limited to acclaimed individuals of world renown. He will examine different types of genius that exist all around us, and how we can celebrate them.
