It’s that time of year again! Community Solutions is providing a look at levies coming up for the May 5 election this year. There are 22 levies in 17 counties that Ohioans can expect to see when they show up to the ballot box. There’s also the gubernatorial primary between frontrunners Vivek Ramaswamy and Amy Acton, which is especially notable. Turnout for this candidate election is crucial because Ohioans will be deciding which candidates will continue to the election on November 3rd.
What is the levy breakdown for the primary election?
There are three counties with multiple levies: Clermont, Marion, and Vinton County. Clermont has three levies, one for children’s services, developmental disabilities, and senior citizen’s services. Marion has two levies: mental health and children’s services. Vinton County has a developmental disabilities and senior services levy.
Across issue areas, there are several notable trends:
- Developmental disabilities are the most prevalent, appearing in 12 counties in Ohio. These counties are Brown, Butler, Champaign, Clermont, Defiance, Delaware, Logan, Lorain, Marion, Morgan, Vinton, and Washington Counties.
- Clermont, Muskingum, Scioto, and Vinton counties have senior service levies, totaling four.
- Three counties have a children’s services levy on the ballot: Clermont, Guernsey, and Mercer.
- Marion and Perry County each have a mental health levy.
- There is one job and family service levy in Portage County, which is the least frequent type in this election.
There are 11 additional levies, nine renewal levies, and two renewal/increase levies
Additional levies are the most common levy type, followed by renewal, with renewal/increase levies appearing only twice. Replacement and emergency levies are not included on ballots anymore due to a veto override that occurred last year in the Ohio Senate.
Below is a full list of levies that will appear on ballots.
